Porco Rosso

1992 | PG | 89  mins | DCP

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki. With the voice of Michael Keaton.

The founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki is one of the world’s greatest and most beloved animators. To celebrate the publication of Nicolas Rapold’s beautiful and revealing new book The Worlds of Hayao Miyazaki: The Influences and Insiration Behind the Iconic Films, we are very pleased to present a screening of one of Miyazaki’s masterpieces, Porco Rosso, followed by a discussion with Rapold and a book signing.

Following the adventures of a war hero turned bounty-hunter, Porco Rosso takes place in the embattled 1920s, with Europe on the eve of another world war. Flying his missions in Miyazaki’s vision of the Mediterranean, our hero takes a vocal stand against the forces on the rise: “Better a pig than a Fascist.”

Nicolas Rapold is the author of The Worlds of Hayao Miyazaki. His writing appears in The New York Times, Sight & Sound, W Magazine, Screen Slate, Air Mail, and Filmmaker. He is the host of the podcast The Last Thing I Saw, and he has curated programs at Film at Lincoln Center, Museum of the Moving Image, Anthology Film Archives, Light Industry, and BAMcinematek.
