Joel Chasnoff: Direct from the Holy Land
Stand-up comedian and author, Joel Chasnoff, visits for a night of laughter and celebration of the joys and oys of Jewish life and our magical relationship with Israel.
“Comedy is a wonderful way to bring a community together,” Chasnoff says. “Especially in challenging times like these. I truly believe that when we laugh together, we are together.”
About Joel Chasnoff:
A Chicago native, Joel attended Solomon Schechter Day School in Skokie, IL and Jewish summer camps throughout the American Midwest.
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Joel traded his diploma for a black beret and boarded a plane to Israel to fulfill every Jewish mother’s dream of serving in the IDF. Assigned to Battalion 71 of the Armored Corps, Joel served as a tank gunner in the Golan Heights and South Lebanon – an experience he chronicles in the comedic memoir The 188th Crybaby Brigade (Simon and Schuster).
Joel’s written four best-selling books, including Israel 201: Your Next-Level Guide to the Magic, Mystery, and Chaos of Life in the Holy Land (Gefen) which he co-wrote with fellow comedian Benji Lovitt. In Israel 201, Chasnoff and Lovitt pull back the curtain to unveil a comprehensive portrait of the country that extends beyond the typical Israel narrative.
To date, Joel has performed his unique brand of clean, uplifting comedy for more than 1,500 Jewish audiences in ten countries. Highlights include the Melbourne (Australia) Comedy Festival, Montreal’s Just-for-Laughs, two Off-Broadway shows, and Israeli late-night TV.

Based on a harrowing true story reported in Frank Shyong’s 2017 LA Times column, Eric Lin’s astonishingly accomplished feature debut tackles issues of mental health, critical illness, and the pressures facing immigrant communities through the intimate portrait of family.
Lucy Liu transforms in a riveting, career-redefining performance as a terminally ill mother who discovers her son’s fixation on mass shootings and takes drastic measures to protect her troubled teenage son (Lawrence Shou). Urgent and deeply personal, the film transcends language and geography, drawing audiences into a powerful and compassionate examination of love, fear, and sacrifice.
“Urgent and unflinching, Rosemead wrestles with themes of identity, mental health and the immigrant experience in America, capturing the dissonance between cultural expectation and personal crisis. At a time when questions around gun violence, parenting and belonging feel more pressing than ever, this powerful film resonates deeply, offering a rare and necessary lens into the quiet tragedies unfolding in communities too often overlooked.” —Nancy Lefkowitz, Tribeca Film Festival.

Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid and The Pawnshop with Live Organ Music by Ben Model
The Kid
The Pawnshop
1921 | NR | 68 min | Comedy, Family | DCP
Charlie Chaplin was already an international star through the popularity of his short films, when he made his first full-length feature. The Kid proved that he was a serious film director—it remains an expressive masterwork of silent cinema. Chaplin stars as his lovable Tramp, raising an orphan (a remarkable young Jackie Coogan) he rescued from the streets. Chaplin and Coogan make a miraculous pair in this film for all ages, a nimble blend of sentiment and slapstick that is, as its opening title card states, “a picture with a smile—and perhaps, a tear.” It will be preceded by The Pawnshop (1916, 26 mins.), one of his greatest short films, in which he plays a clerk in a pawnshop.
INCLUDING LIVE ORGAN ACCOMPANIMENT BY BEN MODEL
About Ben Model
Ben Model is one of the nation’s leading silent film accompanists, performing on both piano and theatre organ. Over the past 44 years, he has created and performed thousands of live scores for silent films at universities, museums, and historic theaters, and is one of the few exponents of this craft who is working at it full-time. Ben is a resident film accompanist at the Museum of Modern Art (NY) and at the Library of Congress’ Packard Campus Theatre, and he accompanies silents at classic film festivals around the USA and internationally. Ben’s Blu-ray/DVD label Undercrank Productions works with archives and collectors to bring undiscovered gems of silent cinema to fans. Ben is a Visiting Professor of Film at Wesleyan University. His book The Silent Film Universe was published earlier this year. Copies will be available for sale and signing at this screening
