Beau Geste - Trailer
1926 | NR | 133 min plus intermission | Action, adventure, war, silent | DCP
Beau Geste thrums with action and drama as a trio of British brothers — future Oscar-winner Ronald Colman, Neil Hamilton forty years before he became Commissioner Gordon on TV's Batman, and the prolific Ralph Forbes — find themselves in the French Foreign Legion and at the mercy of a sadistic commanding officer (Noah Beery). William Powell shines in the supporting cast, eight years before he portrayed Nick Charles in the The Thin Man movie series. One of Paramount Pictures' most popular films of the 1920s, Brenon's epic spectacle inspired multiple sequels, remakes, and, eventually, parodies and, with this monumental restoration, can now reach modern audiences.
Makia Matsumura:
Makia Matsumura, a New York City–based silent film accompanist, has been captivating audiences for more than two decades with her live piano improvisations in front of the silver screen. An alumna of the Pordenone Masterclasses, a distinguished program for emerging silent film accompanists, Makia’s music has played an integral role in silent film events at renowned venues internationally. Demonstrating remarkable musical talent from a young age, she has become a sought-after presence within the silent film community. In addition to her live performances, Makia has provided recorded scores for silent film releases from Kino Lorber, some of which have been featured on Turner Classic Movies and Netflix.

Atlantic City - Movie Trailer
1980 | R | 104 min | Crime, Drama, Romance | DCP
French emigre Louis Malle invited playwright John Guare to collaborate on a film. Their shared interest in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with the promise of its big new hotels and casinos clashing with its seedy underbelly, resulted in this enduring gem that earned five Oscar nominations (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenplay). Susan Sarandon is radiant as a small-time dreamer, and Burt Lancaster has one of his great late-career roles as a past-his-prime gangster with a deep nostalgia for his younger days. (“The Atlantic Ocean was something then…”)
“Louis Malle directed, but this beautifully filigreed, sensitive, and funny fable belongs to screenwriter John Guare. It continues the themes of Guare’s stage plays, examining problems of connection and protection, births and rebirths, beginnings and ends, and does so with some of the most elegant dialogue ever heard in an American film.” Dave Kehr, The Chicago Reader

When Caesar Was King: How Sid Caesar Reinvented American Comedy
WRITER DAVID MARGOLICK IN PERSON
In the 1950s, Sid Caesar was the most influential, highly paid and most wildly talented comedian in America, watched every week by more than twenty million people on Your Show of Shows, a variety show filled with hilarious sketches and film spoofs. Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Neil SImon, and Woody Allen were among the many comedians who worked with Caesar and were inspired by him. The new biography When Caesar Was King: How Sid Caesar Reinvented American Comedy, is a deeply researched and widely acclaimed new biography by longtime New York Times and Vanity Fair writer David Margolick, following Caesar from his early days in Yonkers to his triumphant rise in a New York City that barely exists, in a distinctly Jewish-American success story.
Margolick will talk about his book in a conversation with festival programmer David Schwartz, in a program introduced with a rich selection of some of Caesar’s side-splittingly funny and brilliant sketches. The program will be followed by a book signing.
“Whip smart…a nuanced appreciation of Caesar’s comedy and the overall atmosphere of TV’s early days.” (From review of When Caesar Was King in Esquire)

His music can be heard on concert stages worldwide and a Grammy Award Winning Album, but he feels equally at home surrounded by a gaggle of children, sharing imaginative stories of instruments coming to life. Over the past two decades, he has developed Timbalooloo — a comprehensive method of play-based musical exploration for children that encompasses an internationally touring live show, recordings and videos for children and music classes that reach over 10,000 children per year worldwide through teaching artists that Etkin trains in the Timbalooloo method. The show begins with a problem: Clara (who is later revealed to be Clara Net—the clarinet), has fallen asleep and arrives at the concert in her bed! The children help Oran wake her up, and she calls for her mother, Big Mama Tuba, who answers with a rumble from the back of the audience. Together, they take the children on an interactive journey around the world, exploring musical traditions and seeing how cultures can come together to create fresh new music in a playful and open-hearted way.
