Inspired by actual events, this musical drama tells the story of two families; the Franks and the van Pels, as well as the dentist, Fritz Pfeffer, all forced into hiding during German occupied Amsterdam in the 1940s and the dedicated workers who managed to keep them alive for over two years.  

It begins on August 4, 1944, then flashes back to Anne's thirteenth birthday on June 12, 1942 when, for a brief moment in time,  she and her four friends, collectively known as "The Dippers," enjoy their young lives, up until the invasion.  Nominated for a Perry Award for "Best Original Musical," The DIARY hopes to enlighten and educate those who may not know the story as well as those who do.

About Joel Chasnoff:

A Chicago native, Joel attended Solomon Schechter Day School in Skokie, IL and Jewish summer camps throughout the American Midwest.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Joel traded his diploma for a black beret and boarded a plane to Israel to fulfill every Jewish mother’s dream of serving in the IDF. Assigned to Battalion 71 of the Armored Corps, Joel served as a tank gunner in the Golan Heights and South Lebanon – an experience he chronicles in the comedic memoir The 188th Crybaby Brigade (Simon and Schuster).

Joel’s written four best-selling books, including Israel 201: Your Next-Level Guide to the Magic, Mystery, and Chaos of Life in the Holy Land (Gefen) which he co-wrote with fellow comedian Benji Lovitt. In Israel 201, Chasnoff and Lovitt pull back the curtain to unveil a comprehensive portrait of the country that extends beyond the typical Israel narrative.

Ann Talman is an actor, singer, storyteller, award winning documentary filmmaker, and four-time Broadway veteran. She joined Actors’ Equity with co-star Elizabeth Taylor in 1981 when she landed the plum role in The Little Foxes playing Taylor’s daughter on Broadway. The show traveled the world for eighteen months with stops in Ft. Lauderdale, Washington, D.C. (The Kennedy Center), New Orleans, LA’s Ahmanson Theatre as well as London’s West End. Their loving friendship lasted for the rest of Miss Taylor’s life. Ann’s new cabaret show, Elizabeth Taylor and The Shadow of Her Smile, is directed by Bistro and MAC Award winner Lina Koutrakos with musical direction by Gregory Toroian. The show received critical and audience acclaim when it debuted at 54 Below in March 2022 and then again when it enjoyed a two-night encore engagement the following September 2022. Mariachi Real De Mexico de Ramon Ponce, founded and directed by acclaimed musician Ramon Ponce, Mariachi Real De Mexico has become one of the most respected and dynamic mariachi ensembles in the United States.

Based in New York City, the group is celebrated for its artistry, authenticity, and dedication to preserving the rich cultural traditions of Mexico while presenting them on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. Since its inception, Mariachi Real De Mexico has captivated audiences with its powerful voices, virtuosic instrumentation, and vibrant repertoire that spans the classic sones, rancheras, boleros, and huapangos of the mariachi tradition.

The group is frequently invited to accompany opera singers, ballet folklórico companies, and contemporary musicians, showcasing mariachi’s versatility and universal appeal. Beyond performance, Mariachi Real De Mexico is deeply committed to education and community engagement. In 2002 they established the Mariachi Academy of New York.
