Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 film Breathless, about a French thief (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and his American girlfriend (Jean Seberg) on the run, is one of the defining films of the French New Wave (La nouvelle vague). With its playfully spontaneous style, almost documentary-like style, and its energetic editing and pacing, it paved the way for independent cinema around the world. Richard Linklater’s acclaimed new film Nouvelle Vague, playing at the Barrymore Film Center, depicts the making of Breathless. Here’s your chance to see the original Godard film, with an introduction by Barrymore film programmer David Schwartz.
